Thousands gather at Namugongo as MEPA celebrates Uganda Martyrs’ enduring legacy

Thousands of devoted pilgrims gathered at Namugongo for the Annual pilgrimage organized by the Mbarara Ecclesiastical Province Association (MEPA), with this year’s event led by Fort Portal Diocese. Bishop Robert Muhiirwa Akiiki of Fort Portal inspired attendees to embody the unwavering faith and courage of the Uganda Martyrs.

In his message at the holy shrine, Bishop Muhiirwa emphasized the vital role of faith in guiding daily life, declaring, “We are here to praise and thank God for the gift of the Uganda Martyrs, to seek His blessings, and to pray for our Church and dioceses.” He urged the faithful to follow the martyrs’ steadfast commitment to their beliefs. Drawing from Luke 17:4, he called on Christians to deepen their faith, a gift given through baptism as children of God and members of the Church.

Bishop Muhiirwa offered hope by reminding the congregation of Christ’s resurrection. “When Christ died, He rose on the third day, demonstrating His triumph over sin, death, and the power of Satan. This victory gives us hope: if we trust Him, we too will be victorious.” He likened this victory to a grain that must die to produce a rich harvest, illustrating the enduring legacy of the Uganda Martyrs.

Paying tribute to each martyr, Bishop Muhiirwa highlighted their sacrifices and the causes they upheld, paying particular homage to those from Western Uganda, including Hoima and Fort Portal. He acknowledged their profound impact on the local faith community.

Guided by the theme “Our Faith in Christ Gives Us Victory in the World,” the pilgrimage was a powerful call for MEPA members and all attendees to stay resilient in their faith, drawing strength from the martyrs and the early apostles who endured persecution for the Gospel. The event concluded with a strong reminder for Christians to continue living out the martyrs’ values of faith, courage, and hope, ensuring their legacy remains a beacon for generations to come.
